California Water Service Launches Fifth Annual Student Water-Conservation Competition

The fifth annual Cal Water H2O Challenge is open for registration! Cal Water and the North American Association for Environmental Education invite fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classrooms located in a Cal Water service area to design and submit solutions to global or local water-related issues.

The Challenge is a project-based competition that is complementary to Next Generation Science Standards. Participating in the program offers a unique chance for teachers to develop and implement solutions for community-based water issues. Teachers will also receive technical and monetary support via educational resources and consultants throughout the competition.

Classrooms who register for the Challenge by January 31, 2019 will be entered into a drawing to win 1 of 30 (1/30) $250 classroom grants. The winning classroom will receive $3,500 and an all-expense-paid, overnight field trip to Yosemite with NatureBridge for an outdoor, science-education experience. Other winning classes will receive grants and prizes for students and teachers.

Last year’s grand prize winner, Mr. Mike Buckley’s fifth-grade classroom from Murdock Elementary in Willows, California measured the safety of local drinking water, evaluated the results, and then set out to educate their community on how and why they should help protect their drinking water. Mr. Buckley’s classroom also met with a local water expert, visited a wastewater treatment facility, and then applied their findings by installing 25 storm drain markers in Willows to ward off littering!
